Thus, began a semester long partnership with AZO in which I would Assistant Lighting Design two of their shows, Madame Butterfly and La Cenerentola and Co-Projection Design Riders of the Purple Sage (Riders) with Jake. That project, I would come to find out, was the complete specification and purchase of video system for a world premiere opera that AZO had commissioned titled The Riders of the Purple Sage.
As long as one is determined and ready to work numerous shows at the same time, travel, and have a few late nights, it is feasible.īecause I had some complications with my initial applied project idea, my advisor and committee chair, Professor Jake Pinholster (Jake), approached me in late October about coming onto a new project with him that he had been hired for with a local company: Arizona Opera (AZO). No doubt it is very hard, however my experiences over the last semester have shown me that it is quite possible to enter the freelance design world as a young designer and achieve a reasonably high level of success. How hard is it to freelance as a designer in the theatrical community? Many would tell you it’s quite near impossible to just design.
